Angry White Female

Posted by Kim |

I don't know why, but I go through these periods where I get indignant at the way people treat each other, but more especially about the way some men disrespect women. And when that happens, I just HAVE to listen to Queen Latifah's rap U.N.I.T.Y.

I'm not usually a fan of rap music, but daayuuum this is powerful stuff. Unfortunately, the misogyny is never going to stop until women start demanding respect. We all deserve it and we need to stand up for it.

Peace out!

General Conference

Posted by Kim |

Today was General Conference and it was nice to have Boni join me for the morning session. I particularly enjoyed Elder Holland's talk on the power of words. The one that I think Boni liked the most was Elder Scott's talk about prayer. We had a good discussion afterward and it was nice to be able to share spiritual things with him again. It seems like so long ago that we used to read and discuss the scriptures together, let alone attend church together. I miss that.

I got my hair cut and colored today and I let my hair stylist talk me into getting highlights too. I guess it doesn't look all that bad, but I'm just not used to seeing my hair so light. It's also getting longer and I'm getting to a point where I need to style it or it looks funny. Who knew that knowing how to handle a blowdryer in one hand and a round brush in the other, was a skill you aren't born with? It's going to take some practice, practice, practice.

I've decided that now that the weather is getting warm again and now that I have a larger memory card for my digital camera, I'm going to get out more and take more pictures. With Mom and Dad here next weekend, that'll be a perfect excuse.

(Looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow and "attending" church in my pajamas while I eat brunch, lol....)

Cool Stuff

Posted by Kim |

One of the neat things about my job is that part of what I'm challenged to do is to be curious and interested in EVERY aspect of the internet, not just my little corner of it.

I came across this project called We Feel Fine. Basically it's a couple of geeks who are interested in art and data who wanted to find a way to document how people are feeling on the web. They do this by capturing in a database when somone writes in their blog the words "I feel" or "I'm feeling" and then they created a cool artistic way to graphically represent all of this feeling and humanness.

The thing I find most cool about it is the montage feature. In addition to grabbing the sentence that contains "I feel", if there are any images on the post they put the sentence on top of the image. It creates some amazingly poignant and absurd snapshots of people throughout the world. I could get lost for hours in this...

Cravings

Posted by Kim |

I've got the strongest craving for a chili cheese dog right now and I don't even LIKE chili cheese dogs, so why I would crave one is a mystery. Unless it has to do with the fact that I haven't had anything that even remotely resembles a heart attack in a bun lately.

As a matter of fact, ANYTHING on a bun sounds good right now.

PMS (Pre-Monster Syndrome)

Posted by Kim |

I didn't used to believe in PMS. I thought that women who complained that they turned into raving lunatics at "that time of the month", were merely wanting a convenient excuse for bad behavior. Kind of like blaming a mouse on a motorcycle for a fart noise in an otherwise completely silent room. (Bonus points if any readers can guess who that refers to, lol)

In the past few years, however, I've come to be a true believer in the idea that fluctuating hormones can indeed turn a normally reasonable woman from a Dr. Jekyll into a Mr. Hyde at the drop of a hat. What I've noticed with me is that I tend to become overly sensitive to even the smallest of (perceived) slights. Today is a good example.

I called Boni at lunch like I normally do and simply because he made it sound like he was busy and that he would speak with me later, I found myself giving him the silent treatment. Where in the world did that come from? I hate it when I do crap like that to someone who NEVER pulls stuff like that on me.

Argghhh! I just want to go home and curl up on the couch in a fetal position with a heating pad and wait for this to pass. Best not talk to anyone until it does, too...
